President El-Sisi Meets with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received today French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian, in the presence of Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Sameh Shoukry and the French ambassador to Cairo.

The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency stated that the meeting discussed a number of issues pertaining to the strategic bilateral relations between Egypt and France, which have recently seen significant development, especially at the economic, trade, military and security levels. They also exchanged visions and views within the framework of the regular coordination between Egypt and France on regional issues in the eastern Mediterranean and the African continent.

Mr. Le Drian conveyed to President El-Sisi the greetings of French President Emmanuel Macron. He stressed his country's pride in its strong and distinguished relations with Egypt, which gained further momentum during President El-Sisi’s recent official visit to Paris.

President El-Sisi asked Mr. Le Drian to convey his greetings to President Macron. His Excellency expressed his appreciation for the warm reception during his last official visit to Paris, which reflected the strategic nature of the distinguished bilateral relations between the two countries. In this regard, the President affirmed the importance Egypt attaches to strengthening cooperation with France in various fields.

At the level of bilateral relations, President El-Sisi expressed his aspiration to have the ancient French expertise and technologies passed on in all areas of development in Egypt, especially in railway projects and the national project of developing the Egyptian countryside.

The President also made it clear that there is a promising framework for cultural cooperation between the two countries in light of the City of Arts and Culture in the New Administrative Capital that is opening soon and the Grand Egyptian Museum, the largest in the world.

With regard to political issues, the Spokesman added that the meeting discussed developments related to a number of regional issues of common interest, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean region. It was agreed to continue regular coordination between Egypt and France in this regard, especially in light of the compatibility between the political and economic interests of the two countries.

The latest developments in Libya were also discussed. Mr. Le Drian expressed his country's appreciation for the efforts Egypt has been making under the leadership of President El-Sisi to stabilize the field situation in Libya during the past period, which are appreciated by the entire international community. They also agreed on the importance of the concerted joint efforts between the two sides to consolidate the political path in a comprehensive manner that addresses all aspects of the Libyan crisis, contributes to eliminating terrorism, preserves the State's resources and national institutions, and limits foreign interference.

They also discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Egypt and France to combat terrorism and extremist ideology, especially in the Sahel region of Africa. They also discussed means to support the efforts of the region’s countries to confront the expansion of terrorist groups and the threat of their increased activity there, especially after defeating them in the Mashriq and North Africa region.
