Thursday, 23 September 2021 / 08:13 PM

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with the Prime Minister as well as the Ministers of Local Development; Environment; Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities. The meeting was also attended by the Governor of Cairo, the Advisor to the President for Urban Planning and the Chairman of the Armed Forces Engineering Authority.

The Spokesman of the Egyptian Presidency stated that the meeting followed up on progress in the implementation of the national plan for the integrated management of solid, construction and demolition wastes.

The President was briefed on steps taken with regard to the management of the municipality’s solid waste, collection and transportation services and streets cleaning, in coordination among the ministries of local development, environment and housing. The new waste system depends on a number of main pillars to develop the infrastructure related to the construction of sanitary landfills, intermediate stations, and waste recycling plants in line with international standards, in addition to closing random dump locations. This is in addition to efforts to engage private sector entities of expertise, while integrating the informal sector in the new system.

The President gave directives to swiftly complete efforts toward implementing the waste management plan nationwide, by activating the new system for the management of solid municipality waste, using the latest scientific methods applied worldwide. This shall be the prime objective of the state, namely to improve the quality of the environmental, health, and living conditions of the citizens and curb pollution rates in cities and residential areas.

The President stressed the need for this system to be integrated and to include: waste collection, transportation, treatment, and recycling as well as safe disposal. This is in addition to promoting environmental awareness among all citizens with regard to dealing with waste and the repercussion on public health and the environment. The President underlined the importance of proper inspection of the measures taken to close up all random waste dumps in a safe manner, where the entire area needs to be environmentally scanned with the support of experts so as to avoid any residues or harmful emissions.

The Spokesman said the meeting also reviewed the most important aspects of the new national strategy for the management of construction and demolition waste, to which the state is attaching growing interest, in light of the rapid and unprecedented development taking place nationwide, especially in infrastructure, housing, construction and new cities. As a result, large amounts of waste were generated and need to be managed in a regulated and organized manner. The current amount of construction waste per year amounts to 40 million tons and through the new national strategy, the government is aiming to develop the infrastructure needed to deal with construction and demolition waste as per international standards. The main pillars of the national strategy include employing modern mobile and stationed crushers to eliminate the accumulated quantities, and building recycling plants after conducting environmental and standards studies to achieve the highest percentage of recycling. This will be done in cooperation with the Armed Forces Engineering Authority, which has extensive knowledge and experience in major construction projects across the country.

The President also directed to continue efforts toward managing construction and demolition waste in light of current and future mega construction and housing projects in the country, especially with regard to coordination among the concerned bodies to inspect the standards and measures that would allow using the recycling products as a suitable substitute for natural resources used in construction, and to focus on building recycling sites, using crushers next to various industrial and crafts complexes.
