President El-Sisi Updated on Efforts to Develop Environmental Sector Nationwide

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met today with Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Planning and Economic Development Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Eng. Tarek El-Molla, Minister of Finance Dr. Mohamed Maait, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Dr. Khaled Al-Anani, Minister of Culture Dr. Inas Abdel Dayem, and Minister of Environment Dr. Yasmine Fouad.

The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency stated that the meeting addressed the efforts to develop the environmental sector across the Republic.

The President directed that the efforts to improve the environment system should be integrated with the state's general strategy for the rational management of environmental systems and natural resources, especially with regard to expanding the use of clean energy from natural gas and completing the system of dealing with solid waste, especially construction waste, in light of the current and future major construction and urban development projects, as well as expanding projects that produce biofuels from waste for its environmental, economic and social returns, within the framework of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and its inclusion in the activities of the national project for developing the Egyptian rural villages.

The President also directed that the programs supporting environmental awareness, community participation and youth engagement in this framework should be strengthened. The green incentives provided to bodies, establishments and individuals contributing to improving environmental performance should be maximized under the President’s directives.

The Minister of Environment showcased the ministry’s efforts in several main axes aimed at reducing pollution, preserving natural resources, and confronting environmental changes and emerging environmental problems, as well as integrating the environmental dimension in all state sectors through ensuring coordination and cooperation with all ministries through adopting a new approach that deals with environmental and climate change issues. This was manifested in the actions provided by the ministries of finance, planning, petroleum and education in offering green bonds, integrating sustainability standards into the state's investment plan, improve the status of companies with high emissions, and integrating environmental concepts into school curricula respectively. This is in addition to the related activities of the ministries of tourism, youth and sports, and culture.

The Minister of Environment also made it clear that these efforts have led to improving the state’s overall environmental indicators, especially improving air quality in Greater Cairo and the Delta by developing a national network for monitoring industrial emissions and removing the black cloud, and developing infrastructure and visitor services in natural reserves. As a result, the number of visitors there has increased to 1.1 million in the past two years.
