El-Gabal El-Asfar Wastewater Treatment Plant

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi inaugurated the sewage treatment plant in El-Gabal El-Asfar, affiliated to El-Khanka Center and City in Qalyubia, the largest wastewater treatment plant in the world in capacity and cost.
- It is spread over an area of 78 feddans in El-Gabal El-Asfar.
- The three-station plant treats the sewage for half the population of Cairo, with a treatment capacity of 500 thousand m3/day of sewage water.
- Production of biogas through the advanced techniques on which this huge plant is based on.
- This technology contributes to providing electrical energy up to 60% of the total energy required to operate the huge equipment in the station.
- The project was built by Egyptian hands and it was developed by Egyptian minds that dream of a better future for their homeland. Also, international companies contributed to the project. The work was carried out in many stages, including the implementation of main tunnels and pipelines, basins, purification tanks, emergency channels, chlorination basins, fuel tanks and service buildings.
- The civil construction and electromechanical installations were finalized during 42 months of continuous work.
- The station is based on the highest technology and control systems. Escada is a central control room, through which all the project equipment is operated. It is the brain of the largest station in the world and manages the project 100% automatically.
- The project was funded from the African Bank and the Egyptian government represented by the Ministry of Housing. The capacity of the second part of the second phase of the plant is 500 thousand m3/day of wastewater and serves approximately 2.5 million people.
