President El-Sisi’s Speech at Virtual Presidential Event a Global Call for the Summit of the Future

Thursday, 12 September 2024 / 06:15 PM

Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi participated in the virtual presidential event ‘Global Call for the Summit of the Future,’ which is focused on discussing the countries’ positions and visions in preparation for the “Summit of the Future”, which is scheduled to be held at the United Nations on September 22 and 23. This summit aims to establish an international charter for the future, addressing topics such as sustainable development, international peace and security, science, technology, and innovation.

President El-Sisi delivered Egypt’s speech during this international event, which included the main perspectives of the national stance on the topics of discussion at the Summit of the Future. Those include primarily the establishment of the principles of international law, the reform of the global financial system, the enhancement of efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger, and the protection of water security for all countries. Below is the text of the speech:

‘In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful’

My brother, Your Excellency President Nangolo Mbumba, President of the Republic of Namibia,

Your Excellency Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany,

Your Excellency Mr. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations,

We gather a few days before the “Summit of the Future”, which is filled with great expectations for reaching an international consensus that shall strengthen multilateral action, with the United Nations efforts at its core, to achieve our shared goals for sustainable development, safeguard international peace and security and ensure that all peoples enjoy human rights, comprehensively and equitably.

Ladies and gentlemen,

“The Summit of the Future” convenes amidst growing international crises, both politically and economically. I specifically underscore the grave escalation in the Middle East, with its adverse repercussions on the international stage. This requires our concerted efforts during the summit to achieve the following priorities:

First:

Full commitment to the implementation of the United Nations Charter to establish a system based on the principles and rules of international law, without discrimination or double standards, and on the implementation of the resolutions of international legitimacy, to reinforce the stability of international peace and security.

Second:

Reforming the structure of the global financial system, boosting the engagement of developing countries in economic decision-making mechanisms, and strengthening the role of the United Nations in international economic governance. This shall significantly contribute to facilitating the Global South’s access to essential funding required for sustainable development, in addition to addressing the mounting debt crisis faced by developing countries as a result of the global crises they have not caused.

Third:

Enhancing efforts toward the eradication of poverty and hunger globally, while addressing the challenges of food security, which are exacerbated by multiple factors, primarily water scarcity, whether due to natural or man-made reasons. This necessitates international cooperation to secure universal access to water and to uphold international law in the management of cross-border rivers in order to ensure harmony among the concerned countries and prevent any harm to any country.

Finally, Egypt looks forward to the summit yielding tangible results that foster genuine change, honoring international commitments to provide security and promote sustainable development for all peoples without exception.

Thank you
