President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi Chairs the First Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU) and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs).
In Niamey, Niger, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Monday presided-over the First Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union and the Regional Economic Communities in Africa.
The coordination meeting is considered an outstanding landmark on the path of continental amalgamation and the institutional reform process currently underway in the African Union. Its convening came in line with the determinants of Egypt’s position on efforts exerted in this regard, as it was dedicated to reviewing the division of labor and distribution of tasks between the AU and the African regional economic communities.
President El-Sisi underscored the need for a clear political and strategic vision to enhance the harmony between the AU’s work and the activities of the regional economic communities. He stressed that member states shall formulate this vision to consolidate their ownership of this process and confirm their political will to implement it through a mechanism that brings together the AU, the regional economic communities as well as the relevant regional mechanisms and institutions.
President El-Sisi highlighted the key role of the regional economic communities as a cornerstone for the joint regional integration project that aims to establish the African economic community that represents a pivotal instrument to push forward the development and modernization process in the African continent.
During the coordination meeting, leaders exchanged views on ways to strengthen the interconnection between the regional economic communities and the African Union by drafting a comprehensive framework and a realistic action plan to push forward the continental integration process under the AU’s leadership. This shall take into considerations the main principles and goals agreed upon in Agenda 2063 for development and the strategic goals agreed upon in the successive African summits. This shall also ensure leveraging the comparative advantages of each community, while averting the duplication and the waste of efforts and resources.
