President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi today received Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Nikos Christodoulides in the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Sameh Shoukry and the Cypriot ambassador to Cairo.
The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency stated that the President welcomed the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus to Cairo, stressing the deep-rooted and growing strategic bilateral relationship between Egypt and Cyprus in all fields.
The President affirmed Egypt's keenness to strengthen joint cooperation mechanisms between the two friendly countries, especially at the political, military, commercial and energy levels, and to advance the existing cooperation within the framework of the tripartite mechanism with Greece, in a way that achieves the common interests and goals in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Moreover, Egypt also seeks to face the various challenges in the region. The President asked the Foreign Minister of Cyprus to convey his greetings to the Cypriot President.
For his part, Mr. Christodoulides conveyed the greetings of the Cypriot president to President El-Sisi, expressing his country's pride in the close cooperation ties binding Cyprus with Egypt, which represents a model for constructive cooperation between the Mediterranean countries, especially in light of Egypt's privileged position, regional leverage and pivotal role in the region under the leadership of the President.
The Cypriot Foreign Minister stressed that Cyprus would remain one of Egypt’s supporters in the European Union, confirming the mutual interest of Cyprus to strengthen joint cooperation between the two countries and to develop the tripartite cooperation mechanism between Egypt, Greece and Cyprus. This is a successful and effective mechanism for maintaining coordination and regular institutional cooperation with a view to achieving the economic and social development for the three countries.
During the meeting, views were exchanged on regional issues of mutual interest in light of the two countries’ common positions and the consistency of their interests in the East Mediterranean region. The Spokesman emphasized that the East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) represents an important tool that would open horizons for cooperation and investment among the regional countries in the field of energy and gas.
They also discussed the developments of the Palestinian cause in light of the recent events. In this regard, the Cypriot Foreign Minister expressed his country’s sincere appreciation for the Egyptian efforts under the President’s leadership, which led to reaching a ceasefire between the Palestinian and Israeli sides and calming the situation in the Gaza strip. In this context, President El-Sisi stressed the importance of prompting work to revive peace negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides on the basis of the two-state solution, resolutions of international legitimacy, and the rules of international law.
