President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met today with Prime Minister Dr. Mustafa Madbouly, Minister of Defense and Military Production General Mohamed Zaki, Minister of Finance Dr. Mohamed Maait, Minister of Interior Mr. Mahmoud Tawfik, and Minister of Transport Eng. Kamel El-Wazir. Presidential Advisor for Urban Planning Major General Amir Sayed Ahmed and Director of the Information Systems Department of the Armed Forces Major General Yasser Abu Mandour have also attended the meeting.
The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency stated that, during the meeting, they followed the developments in the national project to establish a “smart transport system" on the road and axes network nationwide.
The President emphasized on starting the establishment of a smart transport system immediately in accordance with the highest international standards in order to guarantee the security and safety of citizens and apply modern technology to manage the road and axes network linking cities and logistics areas with commercial ports on the Mediterranean and Red seas, thus opening new economic horizons and maximizing the state's benefits from its connected infrastructure.
The President also gave directives for applying the first stages of the new system; thus, it would include 20 main axes that have been set gradually as per the performance. The competent authorities will train and qualify the cadres to ensure the optimum efficiency of the operation and use of the system.
During the meeting, they presented the steps and phases of implementing the smart transport system, which is carried out by cooperation and coordination between the various concerned state authorities, such as the ministries of defense, interior and transport. The system aims to improve the traffic flow and the movement of citizens and goods by applying modern technology, in order to assist travelers and provide them with up-to-date information on road conditions and traffic density. Thereby, traffic congestion would be reduced and transportation systems would be improved, thus saving time, effort and energy. It was added that the new smart transport system relies on advanced electronic and communication systems to manage the traffic flow and monitor roads. The first phase of this system will be applied in the busiest roads, including Cairo / Alexandria Desert Road, Cairo / Ismailia Desert Road and Shubra / Banha Al-Hur Road.
The results of the measures taken in terms of ensuring the safety and security of road users were also presented. The system is expected to contribute to reducing accidents by up to about 40%, improving the operational efficiency of roads and reducing the travel time.
