Statement by H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, with the overall theme of “Accelerating the realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls".
Mr. President of the General Assembly,
Mr. Secretary-General of the United Nations,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
It is considered the culmination of the joint global efforts made during the past period for the protection and promotion of women’s human rights and the empowerment of women at the various political, economic and social levels.
Women represent half of the society that must be taken care of to ensure the renaissance, reform and progress of society as a whole and to achieve sustainable development.
At the national level, Egypt was able, over the last period, to take steady steps towards the achievement of equality and the empowerment of women. Last year, Egypt celebrated 100 years of Egyptian women’s participation in public life and it was one of the first countries in the world to set a national strategy for the protection and empowerment of women politically, economically and socially.
The legislative framework related to women has also been developed by adopting a number of new legislations and amending the existing ones. Thereby, Egyptian women will be guaranteed full equality and equal opportunities and their active participation in the community movement will be ensured without any discrimination. Moreover, women will be protected from all forms of violence and harassment and provided with care in their different life stages.
These efforts have yielded many positive results, including the increase of women’s representation in the Cabinet and the Egyptian Parliament to 25%. In addition, Egyptian women also occupied high positions in the judiciary and held many other important, positions including the provincial governor and national security advisor.
Egypt is also keen to cooperate at the international and regional levels by participating in all initiatives related to empowering women and improving their conditions. Egypt currently hosts the headquarters of the Arab Women Organization (AWO) of the League of Arab States.
Egypt is also honored to be chosen to host the headquarters of the Women Development Organization affiliated with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It is a promising new entity expected to start its work during the coming period. The organization is concerned with enhancing the role of women, ensuring their empowerment and realizing gender equality within the framework of the joint Islamic action.
Egypt will also chair the Ministerial Conference on Women of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation over the next two years.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Egypt stresses the importance of enhancing women's participation and their effective contribution to peace negotiations and peacebuilding. Egypt exerts its utmost efforts to help implement the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.
Egypt has actively participated in the formulation of the Arab Regional Strategy for implementing Security Council resolution no. 1325 within the framework of the League of Arab States to be commensurate with the Arab region concerns, the most important of which are ending the suffering of Palestinian women in the occupied Palestinian territories and enhancing the role of women in combating terrorism and extremist ideas.
Egypt also started drafting the first National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security in May 2019. This will mark the culmination of the Egyptian women's contribution to peacemaking, peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts.
Mr. President,
In conclusion, gender equality, women empowerment and the protection and promotion of their rights are the basic pillars of ensuring the progress of human societies and achieving sustainable development. Human rights cannot be fully promoted and protected without protecting and empowering women's rights, in accordance with what was stated in the relevant international covenants and conventions.
I call on everyone, as I’m standing here, to participate in a sincere and more effective way to ensure the full implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
Thank you.
