Dear Presidents,
Your Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
First of all, I would like to thank my dear friend, His Excellency President Emmanuel Macron, for hosting this conference, which is gaining great importance in the wake of the catastrophic blast that ripped through Lebanon as the country grapples with a series of successive crises the Lebanese people are hit by. In today’s meeting, we might relieve some of the burden Lebanon is shouldering and send a strong and clear message of support to the Lebanese people, which they desperately need at this delicate time Lebanon is going through.
I am also certain that the member states of the International Support Group for Lebanon are keen to make utmost efforts to maintain Lebanon’s security and stability and to help it rise back to the surface so that Lebanon would return to its former prosperity.
Egypt and the whole world watched with a blend of grief and pain the wreckage caused by the massive Aug. 4 explosion that ripped through Beirut's port. This painful tragedy claimed many lives, injured more and left several people missing. The Egyptian people and government gave a helping hand to the brothers in Lebanon via launching emergency airlift of the needed relief materials, kits and medical supplies to help the Lebanese people deal with the effects of the Beirut blast. The Egyptian field hospital in Lebanon has also opened its doors to provide emergency medical services to stand by the Lebanese people.
Hence, Egypt reaffirms its full support and solidarity with the Lebanese people and stressed that it stands ready to assist Lebanon by dispatching more emergency aid. He also reiterated, in this respect, that Egypt would harness its potentials to help the Lebanese people reconstruct the affected areas. Thus, engineers and technicians in the fields of infrastructure rehabilitation and damaged power stations repair should be sent to Lebanon. Egypt also calls upon the international community to exert all possible efforts to assist and support the Lebanese people in overcoming the devastating effects of the explosion and rebuilding Beirut.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
As you know, the exceptional and difficult circumstances facing the world and the Arab region as a result of the coronavirus pandemic have placed heavy burdens on many countries, particularly those encountering major economic challenges in the first place, including brotherly Lebanon. Following the tragic blast, Lebanon has now become in a very difficult and complicated situation as a result of all these factors.
This makes the provision of international support to the Lebanese people inevitable and urgent to help them withstand this great challenge. It is also important for the international community to put aside political differences, not allow the use of the Lebanese arena to settle regional disputes and safeguard Lebanon’s sovereignty.
I call on the loyal Lebanese patriots, regardless of their positions, to join hands and to distance their country from regional tensions and conflicts. I call on them to focus on strengthening the Lebanese national institutions and to meet the aspirations of the Lebanese people by implementing inevitable economic reforms that cannot be postponed. Thereby, Lebanon would gain the trust of international financial institutions and international support, as per the resolutions of 2018 CEDRE Conference, which will positively affect Lebanon's efforts towards achieving stability, development and prosperity.
Thank you once again, your Excellency President Emmanuel Macron.
