El-Nozha / El-Merghany / El-Khalifa El-Mamoun Axis

Upon President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives on adopting radical solutions to eliminate traffic jams in the streets of Cairo, “El-Nozha – El-Merghany – El-Khalifa El-Mamoun” Axis was designed and implemented on several stages to ease traffic congestion in Cairo.

It comprises one of the 6 main axes that have been revamped as part of Cairo’s road network re-planning process. Eastern Cairo area topped the first stage agenda. Great importance was attached to this area since the capacity of roads and intersections was compromised under the overdue overhaul of a faltering inland road network. It is no secret that heavy and ever-growing traffic marks Cairo; average traffic density in some axes climbs to 7000 vehicles/hour i.e. 12,000 vehicles/hour at rush hour.

“El-Nozha – El-Merghany – El-Khalifa El-Mamoun” Axis links Ismailia Road with Gesr El-Suez, runs to Hegaz Square, El-Nozha Street and El-Merghany – Roxy Street. The road travels to Ramses Square then to the south of Cairo.

The 12 km-two-way axis comprises 5 lanes. The construction process included:

- El-Nozha Street development:
A 49 m-wide street with 5 lanes per direction.

- Hegaz Square Overpass construction:
A two-way 500 m-long and 26 m-wide overpass, comprising 3 lanes per direction.

- El-Galaa Overpass construction:
A two-way 800 m-long, 16 m-high and 26 m-wide overpass, comprising 3 lanes per direction.

- El-Sabaa Emarat Overpass construction:
A two-way 575 m-long and 26 m-wide overpass, comprising 3 lanes per direction.

- El-Orouba Overpass construction:
A two-way 590 m-long and 21 m-wide overpass, comprising 3 lanes per direction.

- El-Merghany Overpass expansion:
A two-way 650 m-long and 26 m-wide overpass, comprising 3 lanes per direction.
