  • Zohr Field Advantages

1. Achieving self-sufficiency in natural gas

 - With the production of a field of about 1.2 billion cubic feet per day of gas, Egypt's natural gas production increased to about 6 billion cubic feet per day, which is less than the local consumption of natural gas at between 300-400 million cubic feet of gas per day, with consumption reaching 6.3-6.4 billion cubic feet of gas per day. With the expected increase achieve by the Zohr field, Egypt will have already achieved self-sufficiency of gas.

2. Provision of $220 million per month

 - The natural gas holding company EGAS affiliated to the Ministry of Petroleum fills the gap between domestic gas production and domestic gas consumption by importing liquefied natural gas from abroad. Before the operation of the field, the gas import bill from abroad amounted to about 220 million dollars per month, which is equivalent to about $2.6 billion annually.

3 - Attraction to the international oil companies to work in Egypt

 - There are tremendous results that were achieved by the companies working in Zohr field: the Italian company Eni and national companies such as Petrojet and Enppi through achieving a record for the operation of the project in 26 months only, while similar projects may take at least 5-6 years. It stimulates the appetite of international companies to work in Egypt and explore oil and gas in the deep waters in the Mediterranean Sea; an excepted reaction and it will be reflected in the international companies being attracted to the bidding made by the Ministry of Petroleum about a month ago in the Mediterranean, and other bidding in Western Sahara.

According to a report by the US Energy Information Administration, gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean region reached up to about 200 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves, which changes the map of energy players in the Middle East.

4. Petrochemical industry

- One of the most important industries waiting for a surplus in the production of natural gas to maximize the value added to natural gas and its use in the chemical and fertilizer industries. That is considered an added value to the economy through the multiplicity of manufacturing processes which end with products could be embraced by the Egyptian market and exported, thus benefiting from the hard currency.

5. Providing new resources to the state

- With the arrival of Zohr field to the peak of production in mid-2019 and the achievement of the surplus production, Egypt will export natural gas to meet its suspended contracts during the last period, thus allowing the operation of suspended liquefaction stations in which the state owns about 40%.
