Joint Statement of the Tripartite Summit

 

  • At the kind invitation of H.E. President Isaias Afwerki, President of the State of Eritrea, to H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and H.E. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, the three Presidents met today, 10 October 2024, in the Eritrean capital, Asmara. The three Presidents held intensive consultations during a tripartite summit on vital regional and international issues.

 

  • The Presidents of the three countries emphasized the need to commit to the fundamental principles and pillars of international law as an indispensable basis for regional stability and cooperation, particularly the absolute respect for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the countries of the region, the rejection of interference in the internal affairs of the countries of the region under any pretext or justification, and the coordination of joint efforts to achieve regional stability and create a conducive environment for joint and sustainable development.

 

  • Expanding and enhancing cooperation and coordination among the three countries to enhance the capabilities of Somalia's state institutions to address the various internal and external challenges, and to enable the Somali National Army to combat terrorism in all its forms, protect its land and maritime borders, and preserve the unity of its territory.

 

  • In this regard, the summit delved deeper into the following issues and reached a consensus on:

-The crisis in Sudan and its regional repercussions

-The situation in Somalia in light of the recent regional developments

-Issues of security and cooperation between the coastal states of the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, in light of its utmost importance as a vital maritime corridor

-Mechanisms of diplomatic coordination and joint efforts among the three countries

 

  • Welcoming the efforts of both the State of Eritrea and the Arab Republic of Egypt to support stability in Somalia and enhance the capabilities of the federal government, and commending the offer of the Arab Republic of Egypt to contribute troops within the framework of peacekeeping efforts in Somalia.

 

  • It was agreed to establish a joint tripartite committee composed of the foreign ministers of Eritrea, Egypt, and Somalia to cooperate strategically in all fields.
