Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India.
The Spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, said the President reiterated Egypt’s appreciation for the significant efforts Mr. Guterres has exerted during his term as UN Secretary-General—amidst immense challenges and highly complex international conditions—affirming that he will leave behind a valued legacy upon stepping down. The President also emphasized Egypt’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the United Nations and its various agencies, as well as its support for efforts to reform the UN system. This includes, notably, the Secretary-General’s initiative to rationalize expenditure, review mandates, and enhance coordination and integration among UN bodies, while stressing the necessity of ensuring member-state ownership of the negotiation process within this initiative.
The UN Secretary-General expressed his gratitude to the President for the support Egypt has provided throughout his two terms since 2017. He commended the leading role Egypt plays, under the President’s leadership, in promoting the values of dialogue, peace, and coexistence, and in supporting security and stability across the Middle East and Africa, alongside its humanitarian efforts and fruitful cooperation with UN agencies and international organizations.
The meeting also addressed regional developments. The President emphasized that achieving peace and stability in the Middle East requires reaching a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue—in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions—to ensure lasting peace and regional stability. The President reviewed Egypt’s efforts—in coordination with mediators—to implement the requirements of the second phase of the agreement to stop the war in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing the need for the international community to shoulder its responsibilities in ensuring the delivery of sufficient and necessary humanitarian aid to the people in the Strip.
In the same context, both sides discussed the crisis in Sudan. President El-Sisi stressed that any infringement upon the security, unity, and sovereignty of Sudan constitutes a red line that Egypt will not allow to be crossed.
