President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received today a phone call from President Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa.
The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency stated that during the call, the two leaders discussed and exchanged views on the developments of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue, within the framework of the relevant trilateral negotiations under the auspices of the African Union chaired by South Africa.
For his part, the President reiterated Egypt's firm position on concluding a legally-binding agreement that includes the three countries, an agreement that preserves Egypt's water rights by defining the rules governing the filling and operation of the dam. Egypt’s stance is driven by the significance of the Nile water, an existential issue for Egypt and its people. President El-Sisi expressed sincere appreciation for President Maphosa’s efforts in this respect.
President Ramaphosa expressed his appreciation for Egypt's efforts on the path of negotiations, with the aim of reaching a solution to this issue. The President of South Africa stressed that intensive coordination would continue between both countries over the coming period with a view to reaching a fair and balanced agreement on this vital issue.
The Spokesman added that areas of bilateral cooperation were further discussed during the call. In this concern, the two presidents affirmed their keenness to strengthen brotherly relations between Egypt and South Africa at the bilateral, continental and international levels, given the two countries’ political leverage which serves the African interests as a whole.
