President El-Sisi Meets Sultan of Brunei

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received on Monday the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, at Al-Ittihadiya Palace where the reception ceremony was held, the two national anthems were played, and the guard of honor was reviewed.

President El-Sisi noted the special relations that Egypt and Brunei share during a session of bilateral talks that included delegations from the two countries. The President also confirmed that the Sultan's visit gives momentum to these ties, in light of their great understanding of various regional and international issues.

President El-Sisi said that he is looking forward to boosting cooperation with Brunei in the fields of religion, tourism, culture and economy, in addition to attracting Bruneian investment to Egypt and strengthening coordination on regional and international issues of common interest, mainly countering terrorism and extremism.

The Sultan of Brunei confirmed the deep relations between the two countries and peoples and applauded the achievements that Egypt has made to combat terrorism and implement economic reforms and national projects in order to realize sustainable development. The Sultan of Brunei stressed that his country appreciates Egypt's key role in the Arab and Muslim world and relies on Egypt's role for the security and stability of the Middle East and the Muslim world.

Talks touched on means to enhance cooperation, especially cultural and religious cooperation. El-Sisi reviewed Egypt's efforts to counter extremism as well as the role of religious institutions in Egypt to rectify the religious discourse. The President highlighted Egypt's keenness for Al-Azhar's role in Brunei to continue disseminating the tolerant values of moderate Islam, which the Sultan of Brunei lauded. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah confirmed the importance of Egypt's role in confronting extremist and hate speech and in disseminating moderate Islamic thought and noted the respect in which Al-Azhar is held by the people of Brunei, due to its vast cultural and religious influence.

The two leaders reviewed the latest developments in the Middle East and Muslim world and confirmed the importance of coordinating efforts so as to preserve regional peace and security and to enhance cooperation in international fora.
