President El-Sisi Witnesses Agreement on Developing Abu Qir Seaport

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met today with Commander of the Navy Lieutenant General Ahmed Khaled, the General Director of DEME, a Belgian world leader in the field of dredging, and a number of senior officials of the company. Assistant Commander of the Navy for Engineering Affairs, Head of Hydrographic Division and Head of the Political Analysis Unit at the Navy attended the meeting.

The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency stated, during the meeting, that the comprehensive project of expanding and developing Abu Qir port was presented. As per the agreement with DEME, the largest company in Europe in the field of building ports, it will carry out dredging works in the port. The agreement is made in conjunction with the recent agreement with Hutchison, a Chinese leading port network, to establish the largest container handling terminal in the region at Abu Qir Port with an annual handling capacity of 2 million containers.

In this regard, the President praised the professional reputation enjoyed by DEME in this field. His Excellency stressed the value of this vital national project. He also emphasized the importance of implementing it according to the latest technological systems and the highest international standards for the development and operation of ports. The project represents a new addition to the chain of ports extending on Egypt’s northern coast, making Abu Qir port the largest in the Mediterranean and helping the Egyptian ports lead the world ranking.

DEME’s Director-General praised the promising investment opportunities in Egypt, especially those related to developing seaports. Thereby, the economic climate and the efforts to develop the infrastructure that the Egyptian government has undertaken in recent years would be improved.
