President El-Sisi Holds Meeting with Greek PM via Video Conference

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held, today, an expanded meeting via video conference with Greek Prime Minister Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The Governor of the Central Bank, the ministers of electricity and renewable energy, foreign affairs, petroleum and mineral resources, planning and economic development, and international cooperation, their Greek counterparts, as well as the President of the European Investment Bank attended the meeting.

The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency stated that the meeting discussed means to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries- and particularly cooperation in the energy sector with regard to electricity and gas interconnection projects. Cooperation in the sectors of climate change, green transformation, green hydrogen, and solar energy has been further discussed in light of the World Climate Summit (COP27) Egypt is to host in Sharm El-Sheikh next November.

The two sides agreed to move forward with the implementation of the agreements signed between them in these sectors at the bilateral level, through the tripartite cooperation mechanism that brings together Egypt, Cyprus and Greece, as well as within the framework of the strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union.

The Spokesman added that the President, for his part, praised the deep and distinguished relations between Egypt and Greece, the growing development of bilateral cooperation in various fields, and the distinguished political coordination between the two countries on issues of common concern. Furthermore, His Excellency expressed his appreciation for Greece's stances toward Egypt- both on the the bilateral level and within the framework of the European Union- which reflects the strong, long-standing historical relations between the two countries.

The Greek Prime Minister stressed the special, close, and historical ties between the two countries, welcoming the remarkable progress in the bilateral cooperation over the past years. Mr. Mitsotakis expressed his country's keenness to further promote relations between the two countries in various fields. Egypt’s prominent role in strengthening joint action mechanisms in face of the current crises and challenges in the Mediterranean region was emphasized as an example to be followed in maintaining stability and advancing development, economic, and social conditions at the regional level.

The Spokesman added that the meeting also discussed climate change issues and preparations for World Climate Summit (COP27) that is to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh next November. The President stressed that Egypt will adopt a comprehensive approach during its presidency of this summit and will take into account the priorities and positions of all parties to ensure that the summit would yield positive outcomes to support the international climate action. The Greek Prime Minister affirmed the European side's confidence in Egypt's leadership of the upcoming climate summit and their keenness to enhance joint cooperation between the two sides in this framework.
