President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held summit talks today with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his official visit to the Greek capital, Athens.
The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency stated that, at the start of the summit meeting, the Greek Prime Minister warmly welcomed President El-Sisi as a dear friend on his visit to Greece, expressing his country's appreciation to the Egyptian leadership and people and praising the close relations between Egypt and Greece. The Greek PM affirmed his country's keenness to upgrade already-close relations and strengthening bilateral cooperation and coordination at all levels, particularly in light of Egypt's pivotal role as a pillar of stability, security and peace in the Middle East, Eastern Mediterranean and Africa.
For his part, President El-Sisi expressed appreciation to the Greek Prime Minister for his warm welcome and generous hospitality, praising the special, distinguished historical relations between Egypt and Greece. The President expressed Egypt's interest in boosting bilateral relations in all fields and intensifying coordination and political consultation between the two countries, as well as exploring possible areas of cooperation in a way that achieves the common interests of the two friendly peoples, particularly at the political, military and energy levels. Egypt is also keen to foster robust cooperation as part of the tripartite cooperation mechanism, including Cyprus, which is an effective tool for ensuring coordination and cooperation so as to achieve economic development.
The Spokesman added that the talks discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations at various levels; PM Mitsotakis hailed the comprehensive economic reforms made in Egypt, which have shown a remarkable improvement in the indicators of the Egyptian economy and have brought about stability and cohesion amid the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The Greek PM stressed his country’s interest in boosting trade exchange between the two countries and make a qualitative leap in the Egyptian-Greek economic relations, with the participation of the Greek companies, as regards the implementation of mega national projects in Egypt.
In this regard, the President underlined the importance of working to maximize bilateral cooperation at various levels, in light of both the common interests and positions the two countries share in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The President underscored that the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) represents one of the most important tools in this framework as it would expand cooperation and offer new investment opportunities among the countries of the region in the field of energy and gas.
According to the Spokesman, the talks also touched on various developments in regional issues of common interest, especially those related to the Eastern Mediterranean, and ways to cooperate and stand together to confront them. Additionally, the latest developments in the Libyan situation were discussed; the President conveyed Egypt's vision for a political solution in Libya and its efforts aimed mainly at restoring the role of state institutions and filling the power vacuum institutionally. The absence of power gave the armed militias enough space to breed and increase their activity, which threatens to turn Libya into a hotbed of tension in the region as an extension to Europe.
The President, therefore, emphasized that the importance of the commitment of the international community to support the political settlement of the Libyan crisis based on the outcomes of the Berlin Conference and the Cairo Declaration. The two sides agreed on the need to intensify joint coordination, placing full emphasis on ending the Libyan crisis by reaching a political solution that paves the way for restoring security and stability in this brother country.
Developments in combating speeches inciting intolerance and fanaticism were also discussed during the talks. The President stressed that the international community must make concerted efforts to confront this scourge at all levels in order to establish the values of mutual respect and not to offend the sacred religious symbols, which Mr. Mitsotakis agreed upon. In this context, he praised the comprehensive approach taken by Egypt to promote the values of tolerance, coexistence, and dialogue among civilizations and respect for religions.
