Abbas Pasha I

• He was born in 1813, Alexandria.
• He fought in the Levant wars in 1832 with Ibrahim Pasha and led one of the army corps.
• After he came back from war, Muhammad Ali Pasha sought to make him a ruler. He appointed him in some administrative positions, such as the director of the western district.
• He was appointed an inspector of the maritime territories (Delta) in 1835. Then, he was appointed the inspector of the whole bureaus (Divans).
• As the inspector of the bureaus in 1838, Abbas I was also appointed the director of the Khedive’s bureau. In the same year, he was later appointed a Khedive Colonel.
• On November 24, 1848, he ruled Egypt.
• He closed the factories that Muhammad Ali had established. Thus, he got rid of the monopoly system he adopted in industry and agriculture.
• He fostered his relation with the British consular who proposed to him establishing a railway line between Cairo and Alexandria.
• He repaired the Cairo - Suez road and ordered the construction of a straight road between Benha and Cairo.
• He established palaces including: Saray in Abbasiya - Benha Palace – Saray Al-Helmiyya - Sarayat Al-Attaba Al-Khadra.
• He urged the French archaeologist, Mariette, to search for antiquities and shed light on the history of ancient Egypt.
• He issued a new regulation to manage recruitment and authorized voluntary enlistment for military service.
• He established the judicial council and reconstituted the special council and changed its name to the Divan of the Governorate of Egypt. He was participating in the legislative authority and supervised the judicial authority.
• He established the Military School of Mafrouza, sent 19 students to Europe, and summoned most of the members of the missions who had been taught in France since the era of Muhammad Ali.
• In 1854, he was assassinated in his palace in Benha.
