President El-Sisi Meets the German Chancellor in Berlin

Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, at the German Chancellery's headquarters, in Berlin.

The Spokesman for the Presidency said the German Chancellor welcomed the President's visit to Berlin. The Chancellor valued the close bonds between Egypt and Germany, and the remarkable momentum in their relations over the past years, particularly at the level of economic and trade relations. Chancellor Scholz stressed that Egypt is one of Germany's key partners in Middle East as it represents a fundamental pillar of stability and security in the region.

The President expressed his appreciation for meeting with the German Chancellor for the first time in Berlin. President El-Sisi commended the significant leap in bilateral relations in all fields, stressing Egypt's aspiration to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the coming period, enhance political coordination and exchange views on various files of common interest.

The President confirmed that Egypt looks forward for more German involvement, through the mechanisms of its various developmental institutions, in the priorities of Egypt’s development plans in various fields, and for doubling German investments in Egypt, given the promising opportunities available in mega national projects. Chancellor Scholz affirmed Germany’s keenness to support Egypt’s ambitious measures in pursuit of comprehensive development, particularly through increased investments, the transfer of expertise and technology, and the localization of the German industry. The two sides agreed on the importance of working to replicate the successful model of partnership between Egypt and major German companies, such as Siemens, which has proven huge success in recent years.

The meeting tackled ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries at various levels, particularly joint cooperation in the field of liquefied natural gas, clean energy and green hydrogen, and the development of the basic education system in Egypt.

The meeting also discussed ways to coordinate efforts with Egypt as a leading partner of the European Union in a number of regional and international issues of common interest. Foremost of which is the crisis in Libya, particularly as Egypt is one of Libya’s most important neighboring countries, in addition to Egypt’s sincere efforts to support the political track. This is in addition to Germany’s important role in this regard through the Berlin track, where an agreement was reached on the joint concerted efforts between Egypt and Germany to settle the situation in Libya in a comprehensive and integrated manner, that addresses all aspects of the Libyan crisis. This shall contribute to the elimination of terrorism, preserve the state’s resources and national institutions, and curb external interference.

The two sides also discussed the latest developments of the Renaissance Dam file. The two leaders agreed on the importance of breaking the current stalemate in negotiations to reach a legally-binding and balanced agreement on the filling and operation of the dam.

Cooperation and joint coordination were also reviewed within the framework of Egypt's hosting of the World Climate Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh in November of this year, particularly in light of the prominent role of the two countries in the field of environment and climate issues. The German Chancellor expressed his sincere wishes for Egypt's success in hosting this huge international event and in reaching tangible results to enhance international climate action. The President indicated that Egypt intends to focus during this summit on a number of important files, particularly with regard to issues of adaptation in Africa, financing to support the African continent’s efforts to face the dangerous phenomenon of climate change. The meeting was followed by a joint press conference, where the President delivered a speech on this occasion.
