President El-Sisi’s Speech at Joint Press Conference with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev

Saturday, 28 January 2023 / 11:35 AM

“In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful”

Your Excellency, President Ilham Aliyev.

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Allow me at the outset to express my pleasure to be in the capital, Baku, today, honored to be the first President of Egypt to visit Azerbaijan, since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between our countries, which celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2022.

I am also pleased to express my profound admiration of the cultural and urban progress in the capital, Baku, which reflects the serious efforts exerted by the government and the people of Azerbaijan to achieve this honorable image of a civilized and advanced capital. I wish your friendly country more progress and prosperity.

I cannot but extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation to President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, for the warm reception and kind hospitality we received, since touching down in your country. I was keen on emphasizing Egypt’s interest to cultivate closer bilateral relations in order to achieve a quantum leap in the level and depth of our cooperation, and to strengthen frameworks of cooperation and political dialogue to realize the joint interests of the two countries. This is, in addition to strengthening and further advancing bilateral cooperation in various economic, trade, and cultural areas of mutual interest, and building on the rapprochement established between the two countries over the past years.

During our talks, I confirmed the need to reinvigorate trade between the two countries and promote them to the level of our joint political relations, capitalizing on the promising manufacturing and exporting capabilities enjoyed by the two countries. This issue shall be thoroughly explored by the two countries during the 6th Egyptian-Azerbaijani Joint Committee, which is scheduled to convene in Cairo in 2024.

In our discussions we also reviewed Egypt’s excellence in a multitude of promising industrial sectors, which are of huge importance to Azerbaijan and which can see more cooperation between the two sides. Those include the sector of pharmaceutical industries, in which Egypt enjoys a competitive production and export capacity. Therefore, there is an urgent need to give special attention to forging closer cooperation between Egypt and Azerbaijan in this field.

For my part, I also reviewed the major leap in the fields of infrastructure and construction in Egypt and the experience Egyptian companies have gained in these areas over the past nine years. This is, while confirming our readiness to cooperate with the Azerbaijani side in these fields to transfer experiences and implement joint projects in Azerbaijan in order to contribute to the distinguished civilizational shift.

Talks also touched on efforts made by Egypt to overcome the obstacles that foreign investors face, and on the major national projects being implemented to advance the national economy. This includes, in particular, the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the advantages it offers to foreign investors, notably access for their products to a large number of neighboring Arab and African markets by taking advantage of the free and preferential trade agreements that Egypt shares with these countries.

We welcomed resuming flights between Baku and Sharm El-Sheikh, with the possibility of considering launching direct flights between Cairo and Baku. This would contribute to enhancing tourism as well as cultural and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Also, during my talks with His Excellency President Ilham Aliyev, we discussed a number of international and regional issues of common interest, whether in the Middle East or South Caucasus. We confirmed the importance of dialogue and negotiation and of giving priority to the voice of reason and wisdom, bearing in mind that military force alone was never sufficient to achieve lasting, comprehensive and just peace.

It is necessary to negotiate in order to complete the path of peace and to achieve a better reality and a decent life for the peoples, especially in the current stage, during which the peoples’ suffering doubled at the economic level.

When the world just started recovering from the coronavirus pandemic, the Russian-Ukrainian crisis and its subsequent economic repercussions cast a shadow over various vital sectors in the world, in terms of food and energy security, in addition to maritime traffic and the sectors of banking, tourism and civil aviation.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Once again, I would like to wish President Ilham Aliyev all the best in leading Azerbaijan and its hospitable people.

I am confident that this visit will be a real starting point, by the political momentum gained and understanding shared at the summit level, to strengthen Egyptian-Azerbaijani relations in various fields, especially at the economic and investment level.

I would like to conclude by wishing Azerbaijan and its people all progress and stability.

Thank you.
