He graduated from the Faculty of Law, Cairo University in 1946. He earned his Law Diploma in 1947.
He received diplomas in the History of Law and Romanian Law in 1949, Diploma of Private Law in 1950 and PhD from University of Paris in 1957.
In 1957, he earned the Diploma of Mediterranean Law from University of Rome in 1959.
As one of the teaching staff, he rose through the ranks at the Faculty of Law, Cairo University until he became a professor and head of the department of the History of Law.
He was appointed Vice-President of Cairo University (1975-1973) and its President (1975-1978).
In 1976, He was appointed Member of the House of Representatives in 1976, representing Tamya Center, Fayoum. At that time, he was the head of the education committee in the House of Representatives.
He served as the Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament from November 1978 to February 1983.
He served as the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt (October 6-14, 1981) after the assassination of President Mohamed Anwar Al-Sadat.
He received many awards and honors, including the Legion of Honor from the French government in 1977 and the State Appreciation Award in 1990.
He passed away on February 21, 2008.
