Sufi Abu Taleb

  • He was born on January 27, 1925 in Fayoum.
  • He graduated from the Faculty of Law, Cairo University in 1946. He earned his Law Diploma in 1947.
  • He received diplomas in the History of Law and Romanian Law in 1949, Diploma of Private Law in 1950 and PhD from University of Paris in 1957.
  • In 1957, he earned the Diploma of Mediterranean Law from University of Rome in 1959.
  • As one of the teaching staff, he rose through the ranks at the Faculty of Law, Cairo University until he became a professor and head of the department of the History of Law.
  • He was appointed Vice-President of Cairo University (1975-1973) and its President (1975-1978).
  • In 1976, He was appointed Member of the House of Representatives in 1976, representing Tamya Center, Fayoum. At that time, he was the head of the education committee in the House of Representatives.
  • He served as the Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament from November 1978 to February 1983.
  • He served as the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt (October 6-14, 1981) after the assassination of President Mohamed Anwar Al-Sadat.
  • He received many awards and honors, including the Legion of Honor from the French government in 1977 and the State Appreciation Award in 1990.
  • He passed away on February 21, 2008.
