President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi inaugurated New Asyut Barrages, one of the largest water installations that were recently built on the Nile River to improve irrigation and is also the third largest water project built on the Nile River after the High Dam and the Nag Hammadi Barrages and implemented by a consortium of international and national companies.
Project Strategic Objectives: -
In light of the fact that the old Asyut barrages that have been established for 115 years have been degraded, it has become unable with its old design to meet the needs of the current state. Therefore, New Asyut barrages were established to replace the the old barrages.
Components:
The project includes the construction of a clean (environmentally friendly) hydroelectric power plant, characterized by its long lifetime and low operating and maintenance costs compared to other power stations. It is made of 4 tubular-type turbines, which produce 32 MW of electricity as each of its turbines produces 8 MW, saving about 50,000 tons of fuel and contributing to reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
The production of Asyut hydropower station has been linked with Al Maasara transformer substation in Al-Fateh Center and linked to the national grid, so that it can fully illuminate Asyut Governorate in case of electrical faults. Among the project's contents is developing of Ibrahimiya Canal mouth barrage and replacing the old gates with modern ones operating with a hydraulic system to open and lock.
The opening of the project is shown in the attached video (40:11 to 40:40).
