President El-Sisi Follows Upon Projects by Ministry of Transport

Tuesday, 16 November 2021 / 05:42 PM

Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Transport Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir and Presidential Advisor for Urban Planning Major General Amir Sayed Ahmed.

The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency stated the meeting discussed the ongoing projects, especially in the road sector, of the Ministry of Transport across the country.

Hence, the meeting addressed the implementation status of the Ring Road surrounding Greater Cairo, which was developed based on various main pillars. These pillars are, first, expanding the road to accommodate 7 traffic lanes per direction; second, enhancing it with intelligent transport systems (ITS); third, implementing a novel public transportation system called bus rapid transit (BRT), a replacement for random transportation.

This BRT system runs on clean energy, whether electric or natural gas, to decrease pollution, save energy, reduce accidents, ameliorate general health, and improve economic performance. The system will also reduce private-car use like international cities, marking a more sustainable civilization leap. This 106-km-long BRT system will be the longest in the world; it will be introduced in parallel with the other new transportation systems, especially the monorail, electric train and underground metro. This shall signal a huge quantum leap in the mass transportation system in Greater Cairo.

In this regard, the President directed that the development process of the Ring Road be expeditiously implemented as scheduled. This is due to the fact that it is one the most important axes linking between Greater Cairo and its neighborhoods to accommodate the increasing number of citizens and vehicles.

The Spokesman also added that the Minister of Transport showcased the development process of the coastal international road running from Port Said to Marsa Matrouh, passing through Alexandria.

In addition, the Minister presented the construction status of Damietta’s integrated logistic corridor that includes container terminal in Damietta Port: “Tahya Misr Terminal 1”.

This project includes the construction of an integrated multimodal transport system and the application of the latest information technology systems to manage it. This shall be done in order to serve the Egyptian exports and handle the increasing container traffic in the Egyptian ports as a direct result of the mega development projects across Egypt. Damietta Port would, hence, turn into a hub for transit containers in the Mediterranean.
