President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met today with Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Dr. Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi.

The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency stated that the meeting discussed a number of projects for the Ministry of Electricity, especially in the new and renewable energy sectors and electrical interconnection with neighboring countries. The meeting further addressed the main control center in the national electricity grid in the New Administrative Capital.

Dr. Mohamed Shaker showcased the developments within the electrical interconnection project with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by extending power lines and establishing a number of electricity transfer stations on both sides, with the aim of transferring electrical energy between the two national electricity grids in the two countries. Thus, mutual economic benefit would be achieved throughout the year in accordance with the needs of each side.

Furthermore, the meeting discussed the status of the infrastructure works carried out for completing the overhead power lines on the construction project for “Taameer” (reconstruction) Axis on the North Coast as well as for rerouting power lines and removing those intersecting with the axis.

In this context, the President emphasized that this project should be completed and changes be made as scheduled. The extension of the reconstruction axis toward the west should also be considered, as underlined by the President, in order to accommodate the massive movement of citizens. The axis is a major one linking between Alexandria and the North Coast’s villages and cities.

The Spokesman added that the Minister of Electricity also showcased the national projects in the electricity production sector from new and renewable energy sources- especially wind and solar power- in cooperation with private sector companies and in partnership with foreign expertise.

As per Egypt’s Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy (ISES), renewable energy capacity should contribute 42% of power capacity by 2035.

In this regard, President El-Sisi gave directives for redoubling efforts in implementing national plans aiming to enhance renewable energy. The aim is to diversify energy sources on which the development process in Egypt depends.

In this respect, the Minister of Electricity showcased cooperation efforts with long-standing expertise in the field of green hydrogen production by renewable energy.
Under the President’s directives, an integrated national strategy for hydrogen production should be developed with the participation of state sectors.

The meeting also discussed the status of a number of projects in the New Administrative Capital (NAC): the main control center of the national electricity grid, the electrical supply project, high-voltage cable tunnels, and control and distribution centers.
