President El-Sisi Meets IAEA Director General

Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. The meeting was attended by Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohammed Shaker, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry and Chief of the General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel.
 
The Spokesman for the Presidency stated that the President welcomed the IAEA Director General’s visit to Egypt, noting his efforts to activate the Agency’s important role within the framework of using nuclear science and technology worldwide. This is in addition to supporting efforts to spread international peace and security, stressing that the IAEA bears a great responsibility towards enhancing the region’s stability and security.
 
President El-Sisi referred to Egypt's inclination to benefit from the peaceful uses of atomic energy for development by establishing El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant. This is in addition to keenness to strengthen solid cooperation with the Agency and benefit from its experience to apply the highest international standards in the field of nuclear security measures.
 
The Spokesman added that Mr. Grossi expressed his honor to meet with the President, praising Egypt's key contributions on the regional and international arenas in the field of nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful uses of atomic energy alike, stressing the Agency's full support for El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project, which is a major and significant step in the direction of peaceful uses of nuclear energy in Egypt. This shall elevate Egypt to broader levels and horizons in the development process and make it one of the most important leading countries in this field at the regional level. Mr. Grossi looked forward to this project to represent a model for fruitful cooperation between the IAEA and Egypt.
 
The meeting also touched on means of cooperation between Egypt and the IAEA within the framework of the upcoming IAEA initiative, Rays of Hope, to treat cancer patients in Africa by selecting one of the leading Egyptian medical institutions that has extensive experience in this field, among the regional centers that will provide the necessary technical support for the initiative in the continent.
 
They meeting also touched on Egypt's hosting of the UN Climate Change Conference 2022 (UNFCCC COP 27) and the possibility of benefiting from organizing this huge event to highlight the important role of clean energy that helps in reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change, to which Egypt contributes remarkably through El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project.
