President El-Sisi Meets with Libyan Tribal Sheikhs and Notables

Thursday, 16 July 2020 / 12:00 PM

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met this morning with the Libyan tribal sheikhs, notables and dignitaries representing all Libyans.

The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency stated that the meeting was held under the slogan "Egypt and Libya… one people, one fate" in the presence of the Prime Minister, Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as the Chief of the General Intelligence Service. During this meeting, President El-Sisi confirmed that the efforts Egypt has been exerting at all levels in Libya are primarily aimed at honoring the free will of the Libyan people to guarantee a better future for Libya and its coming generations, the Spokesman said. The red lines previously announced by the President in Sidi Barrani are basically a call for peace and an end to the conflict in Libya. However, Egypt will not stand idly by in the face of any moves posing a great direct threat not only to Egypt’s and Libya’s national security, but also to the Arab, regional, and international one at large.

For their part, the tribal leaders have mandated President El-Sisi and the Egyptian armed forces to intervene so as to protect the sovereignty of Libya. In addition, they have been authorized to adopt all the necessary measures to secure Libya’s and Egypt’s national security interests and face common challenges. The tribal leaders' call is in line with the Libyan House of Representatives’ request and authorization for Egypt to intervene with a view to protecting the Libyan people and preserving Libya’s unity and territorial integrity.
