“In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful”
Your Excellency President Zoran Milanović,
President of the Republic of Croatia
Ladies and Gentlemen,
At the outset, allow me to welcome His Excellency President Zoran Milanović, President of the Republic of Croatia, on his first visit to Egypt. This visit will, no doubt, contribute to promoting relations toward broader and more distinguished horizons. This takes into consideration the longstanding historical relations between the two countries, which, historically, witnessed Egypt’s hosting of around 30-thousand Croatian refugees, in Al-Shatt camp, during World War II.
It also gives me pleasure to congratulate the Republic of Croatia, its President, government and people, on joining of the Schengen Area and Eurozone, as of January 1, 2023. This culminated Croatia’s progress and successes in integrating into the institutions of the European Union.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
During our talks, there was an expression of appreciation for the Croatian side for its supportive political stances on issues pivotal to Egypt, primarily the Renaissance Dam dossier. Croatia’s positions in support of Egypt in international fora, particularly the European Union, were also lauded, in addition to the alignment in views with regard to a multitude of issues of mutual interest.
We underscored, during our discussions, the importance of working toward forging closer economic cooperation and increasing the volume of trade between the two countries, which is not commensurate with the level of the outstanding political relations between the two sides. We look forward to fostering closer relations, particularly as Croatia has become one of the southern gates to the European Union, which can contribute to boosting trade, on one hand, and strengthening energy security in Central and Southern Europe, on the other.
During the meeting with His Excellency the President of Croatia, we also highlighted Egypt’s remarkable progress in the production of energy and its resources, whether through gas discoveries in the East Mediterranean region and the establishment of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF), which is headquartered in Egypt, or through its diligent efforts to localize the green hydrogen industry and further develop the renewable energy sector, like Benban Solar Park in Aswan.
This is, in addition to its activity in the field of wind-power generation and the establishment of massive wind farms in some areas, including the wind installations in Jabal al-Zeit region. The meeting also explored means of cooperation between the two countries in the field of energy, and encouraging Croatian companies to work and invest in Egypt in this field.
The talks also reviewed the Egyptian State’s efforts to attract foreign direct investments through the establishment of special economic zones, such as the Suez Canal Economic Zone, and the issuance of the golden license for investment. Within this framework, the Croatian side was invited to establish industrial zones in Egypt to leverage its free and preferential trade agreements with Arab and African countries. This shall facilitate the access of Croatian products into the markets of these countries, with a competitive advantage.
We also exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues of common interest in the Middle East, particularly the Palestinian issue as well as the situation in Libya and in eastern and southern Europe. We focused on current international crises, as well as the file of illegal immigration. Egyptian efforts in this regard were reviewed, noting the importance of intensifying cooperation between Egypt and the relevant EU institutions to support Egypt’s efforts in this regard.
Once again, I welcome President Zoran Milanović in Egypt, wishing him a successful visit and a pleasant stay in Egypt and its remarkable tourist destinations.
Thank you,
